Creating Inclusive Library Spaces
Turner County's local library has always been a place where our community can learn, explore, connect, and feel a sense of belonging. Victoria Evans Memorial Library continues to expand their services to meet the needs of the community. VEML was awarded a Libraries Transforming Grant through the American Library Association. A remodel of a portion of the library is underway for the development of a sensory room designed to provide a supportive environment for individuals who may benefit from a quieter, more sensory friendly environment.
Ms. Eilene Perry, TCES lead special education teacher, provided a presentation and training to VEML staff and regional librarians. This event focused on understanding and supporting children and adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The presentation also discussed the importance of recognizing that every individual is different and there is no single approach that will work for everyone. Sensory processing can affect a person's experience in public environments such as the library. A sensory room can provide an alternative environment where individuals can take a break and regulate.
During the 2025–2026 school year, Mrs. Christy Casmiro, VEML librarian, collected input from Ms. Perry’s students and their parents during the planning stages and prior to construction. Her students are excited to explore the new space during their visits to VEML. Construction and installation of the sensory room are expected to be completed in October.
